The photography

Our main focus

There were three reasons why we established Oltepesi in 2017:

  1. Providing the best opportunities for wildlife photography with top-notch guides and specially modified vehicles
  2. Giving back to nature and local communities through conservation and social support
  3. Showcasing Maasai culture

The main reason, however, is no. 1: photography. Our primary focus is on catering to wildlife and nature photographers. That is our core purpose.

Our open and spacious safari vehicles are specifically designed for photography, allowing low-angle shots. We operate from before sunrise to after sunset daily, typically 13-14 hours, to optimise our time and lighting conditions. Our guides are deeply committed to their guests and are the best in the Mara at spotting wildlife and interpreting the situation to anticipate what will happen next. They are also experienced in working with photographers. They understand that moving the vehicle a metre forward or backwards can make a significant difference to the shot. They are always on the lookout for potential photographic opportunities, such as backlighting, hunting scenes, or interactions and behaviours among animals.

Overall, this provides numerous excellent photo opportunities, leading to images of high quality and creativity. It is also very rewarding for us to see our guests regularly achieving high scores and receiving awards in international photo competitions.

Oltepesi is also the Premium Sponsor of two highly esteemed photo contests: the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year (GDT) and the Nordic Nature Photo Contest (NNPC). The main prize for the Overall Winner in these contests is an 8-10 day all-inclusive safari in Maasai Mara for two at Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp.

In summary, Oltepesi is not, and should not be, a luxury lodge. Our idea of “luxury” centres on personalised service and friendship, excellent cuisine, private safari vehicles specially adapted for nature photography, and expert wildlife guides who understand photography.
